ESAAF Position Paper: A Scientific Reflection on the EU Fertiliser Action Plan

The European Science Alliance on Agriculture and Food (ESAAF) has published a new position paper on the European Commission’s Fertiliser Action Plan. The paper supports the plan’s focus on fertiliser security and innovation, while highlighting the need for a broader transition towards circular, resource-efficient, and sustainable nutrient management. ESAAF emphasises nutrient-use efficiency, nutrient recycling, soil health, climate resilience, and reduced dependence on external inputs as key priorities for the future of European agriculture. The paper also calls for stronger integration of crop and livestock systems, increased support for biofertilisers and precision technologies, and a systems-based approach that aligns fertiliser policy with environmental, climate, and food security objectives.
