The European Science Alliance on Agriculture and Food (ESAAF) has published a new position paper calling for a fundamental shift in the future EU Livestock Strategy. The paper argues that livestock should be recognised not only for food production, but also for its role in nutrient recycling, biodiversity, landscape management, rural vitality and climate resilience. ESAAF advocates for an outcome-based policy framework that rewards farmers for delivering public goods, supports a just transition, and promotes circular and agroecological livestock systems adapted to local conditions. The position paper aims to contribute to the European Commission’s work on developing a long-term, sustainable and competitive vision for the EU livestock sector.
